Be honest; it’s the best thing you can do for your horse. If the horse isn’t “world championship” caliber….don’t show him against world championship level horses. The horse isn’t going to win and you are going to be unhappy. Not pleasant for you or the horse. Find a level at which the horse can win. Maybe it’s a smaller show, maybe it’s a local open show…maybe the horse fits in a “novice” class…or maybe he should be completing walk/trot classes only. When you over match your horse, you and the horse lose; you don’t need that frustration and disappointment and neither does your horse.
